IIHF World Hockey Championships – Will Russia Win? (April 29 - May 15)

Russia lead the favourites at this year’s World Hockey Championships. Pinnacle Sports has “Yes, Russia will win” at 2.740*, while “No” is priced at 1.485*. The Russian squad could boast NHL talents like Nikolai Kulemin, Ilya Kovalchuk, and Maxim Afinogenov, formerly of Atlanta, along with a slew of seasoned Russian league pros.

The east European’s have a pedigree for doing well in the competition – the side finished second at the 2010 World Championship, losing to the Czech Republic 2-1 in the gold-medal game.

Canada is also among the notables, with “Yes, Canada will win” priced at 3.510*, while “No” is set at 1.327*. The Canadian side should be strong with the likes of Jason Spezza, Rick Nash, Jeff Skinner, Jordan Eberle, and John Tavares up front, and Dion Phaneuf, Brent Burns, and Marc Methot highlighting the blueline. The young goaltenders Devan Dubnyk and James Reimer will be most likely be between the posts.

Despite a strong domestic league, Canada finished seventh in 2010’s tournament, losing to Russian 5-2 in the quarterfinals.

The defending world champs, the Czech Republic, are rated as a competition long-shot. “Yes, the Czech Republic will win” is set at 5.940*, with “No” priced at 1.149*. The Czechs got an inspired effort from former NHL star Jaromir Jagr in last year’s gold-medal run.

Jagr, who scored three goals and added four assists, has committed to return for 2011, along with team captain Patrik Elias and Jakub Klepis - who was the team’s second top-scorer.

Team Sweden is another country to watch in Slovakia. Odds have “Yes, Sweden will win” at 6.000*, while “No” is set at 1.147*. The Swedes earned a bronze medal at 2010’s tournament in Germany, defeating the host side 3-1 in the third-place final.

Sweden will not have key-man Daniel Alfredsson on this year’s team and is still waiting to hear from defenceman Erik Karlsson, who could sit out with a thigh injury. However, Magnus Paajarvi, who led the team with five goals and four assists in 2010, is expected to return.

Other sides in action include Germany, Switzerland, France, Belarus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, Denmark, the US, Austria, Latvia and Norway.
